PeerJ is an Open Access, peer-reviewed, scholarly journal. PeerJ does not publish in the Physical Sciences,the Mathematical Sciences, the Social Sciences, or the Humanities except where articles in those areas have clear applicability to the core areas of Biological, Environmental, Medical or Health sciences. PeerJ evaluates articles based only on an objective determination of scientific and methodological soundness, not on subjective determinations of 'impact,' 'novelty' or 'interest'.

PeerJ applies the highest standards to everything it does - specifically, the publication places an emphasis on research integrity; high ethical standards; constructive peer-review; exemplary production quality; and leading-edge online functionality. PeerJ does not accept pre-submission enquiries; however, if you are unsure whether or not your article fits our Scope then please email us at: editorial.

PeerJ reserves the right to decline to consider, or publish, any submissions for any reason. This can include those studies that do not have a grounding in established scientific knowledge, or that conflict with the PeerJ's core values.

Peer Review Criteria Articles are peer reviewed against criteria which aim to judge whether or not an article should join the Scientific Literature. These criteria are grouped into 3 broad categories:. The specific guidelines for each of these categories can be found on the Editorial Criteria page.

Role of the Academic Editor 1. All submissions which pass our basic submission checks are peer reviewed and the peer review process is overseen by an Academic Editor on our Editorial Board.

Academic Editors are experienced scientists in their field. They act independently from PeerJ and make independent decisions on submissions. Individual Academic Editors take on responsibility for individual submissions. They solicit expert peer reviewers to comment on the article and they make an editorial decision based on their knowledge of the field utilizing the input of those reviewers. Academic Editors are not permitted to accept a submission unless it has been reviewed by at least one external reviewer.

On average, we expect that all submissions will be reviewed by two peer reviewers in addition to the Academic Editor. Academic Editors are required to treat all submissions confidentially; to declare any potential conflicts of interest; and to adhere to the highest prevailing standards of publication ethics. The Academic Editor who made the Acceptance decision is named on all published articles.PeerJ is an open access peer-reviewed scientific mega journal covering research in the biological and medical sciences.

PeerJ uses a business model that differs from traditional publishers — in that no subscription fees are charged to its readers — and also used to differ from the major open-access publishers in that publication fees were not levied per article but per publishing researcher and at a much lower level.

Originally, PeerJ charged authors a one-time membership fee that allowed them — with some additional requirements, such as commenting upon, or reviewing, at least one paper per year — to publish in the journal for the rest of their life. However, since October 1, at least, PeerJ has reverted to article processing chargescoupled with an alternative lifetime membership subscription.

Participants registered as teams of up to five members and were provided kits with instructions and materials to collect samples: three swabs and two 50 mL conical tubes for soil samples along with gloves, plastic spoons for scooping soil, alcohol swabs to sanitize the soil collection spoons and labels for samples.

Approximately 40 kits were distributed and over swab and soil samples were received between January 30 and February Participants were provided with detailed instructions on how to sample environments around the campus and use the sampling kit.

Participants were instructed to use the swab to sample a safe location and immediately place the swab in the transport container.
